Great education has always been a matter of privilege and luck. Engaging teachers are rare, and private tutoring is expensive. The students who would benefit most are often the ones whose families cannot afford it.

Knowunity was started in 2020 by students, for students, to solve problems we faced ourselves. Today, more than 30 million students have learned with Knowunity. And our overarching goal is even bigger: to create a personal learning companion for a billion students.

And that only works if the core of the app stays free.

What is free on Knowunity (and always will be)

When you open the app, you will notice that everything is centered around your personal learning companion, Knowie. Knowie guides you through each study session and beyond, adapts to your goals, your level, your year and your curriculum.

For all of that, you do not need a subscription. Every student in our app can:

• **Lean any topic in every subject. **Explore a huge collection of study notes, summaries, and practice sets shared by your peers in our community. We check and rank them so you can quickly find the ones that help you most.
• Ask Knowie 24/7. Your personal AI learning companion is always at your fingertips. Whether you're stuck on a tough question, want a second pair of eyes on your summary, or are just curious about something, Knowie helps by giving you hints instead of handing you the answer, until you get there yourself and actually learn something.
• Enhance your own materials. Upload what your teacher handed out in class, or your own notes, and Knowunity creates summaries, quizzes, practice tests, flashcards and much more from them, tailored to exactly what you need to learn.
• Get unstuck on your homework. Take a photo of a task and Knowie gives you the first nudge, so you can solve it on your own. From there, we guide you step by step until you reach the answer.

Why are some things paid then

Keeping Knowunity running costs real money every single day, and the more we personalise the app with AI, the higher our costs.

Already in the first month after launch, Knowie handled more than 150 million messages, and students talk to it 4x as much as before. That adds up fast,

Then there are the moderation and quality checks that keep uploaded content accurate and suitable for students, the work of matching everything to school curricula, customer support and, of course, the team that builds the app.

That left us with a choice: charge every student, or keep the core free and offer extras to those who want more. We chose the second option. A smaller group of subscribers covers a large share of the costs, and that is what keeps learning free for everyone else.

Advertising makes up the rest. But you won't find random ads on Knowunity. We work with partners who help students figure out what comes after school, from apprenticeships in IT, healthcare, the trades, logistics or public service to university courses in everything from medicine to engineering. Students only see offers that match their interests, so an ad can actually help them take their next step.

How you benefit from Knowunity Pro

All kinds of students choose Knowunity Pro. Some are highly ambitious and want the best possible exam results so they can graduate and take the next step in their careers. Others are families who want to give their children the best learning tools available. And there are plenty more reasons in between.

Flashcards, quizzes, summaries and more from your own notes

It's Sunday evening and your biology test is on Tuesday. You take photos of your class notes and the worksheet your teacher handed out, and a few minutes later you have a summary of the whole topic, a set of flashcards for the key terms and a practice quiz to see what you still don't know. On Monday, you only revise the parts you got wrong.

Verified content from top students

Your class has just started a new history topic and your own notes are patchy. Instead of searching through random websites, you open notes from students who have already aced this topic, checked by our team for accuracy. You see how they structured it, fill in your gaps and have a clear overview before the next lesson.

Personalised study plans

You have three exams in two weeks and no idea where to start. Tell Knowie your exam dates, your subjects and how confident you feel in each one, and you get a day-by-day plan that fits around school. Each day tells you exactly what to revise, with quizzes and practice tests built in, and the plan adapts if you fall behind or get ahead.

How one subscription helps many students

On an average day, for every subscriber, about 17 students learn for free. Each subscription helps pay for the AI answers, the servers and the moderation that all of them rely on.

And that help makes a real difference. In September 2026, we surveyed 1,539 students from the Knowunity community in Germany. Since they started learning with AI, 78 percent say they understand their lessons better, and 71 percent report better grades. What they value most is patience: 73 percent say the AI keeps explaining until they get it. That counts for a lot when only a third of students regularly put their hand up in class to ask.

When is Knowunity Pro right for you

If you mainly use Knowunity by asking Knowie questions occassionally, the free version is all you need.
