Past Tenses

Past Continuous

Example: While I was cooking, the phone rang.

Question Tags

Question tags are short questions added to the end of statements to ask for confirmation or agreement.

Structure: Auxiliary verb + pronoun

Example: She is coming to the party, isn't she?

Common Question Tag Structures:

  • For "be" verbs: She is happy, isn't she?
  • For other verbs: She likes coffee, doesn't she?
  • For "have": She has a car, hasn't she?
  • For modal verbs: She will come, won't she?

Highlight: The auxiliary verb in the question tag is usually the opposite (positive/negative) of the main clause.

Special Constructions

  • "I don't know how to" = "I can't"
  • "Not to" for negation with infinitives
  • "Manage to" or "succeed in" to express accomplishment

Example: I managed to finish the report on time.

Vocabulary: "To go to somewhere" and "to play the piano" are examples of common verb phrases in English.
